Abingdon's Second Grade Team
Second graders are immersed in a variety of learning experiences using their multiple intelligences to improve their critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. In ELA, we use Fundations for phonics instruction and CKLA for reading and writing instruction. Some of the topics students learn about in ELA are fairy tales and tall tales, insects, ancient civilizations, the human body, and mythology. Students engage in Math Workshop and learn about topics like place value, adding and subtracting with regrouping, data collection and graphing, and fractions. Science is focused around forces and magnets, matter, weather, and plant and animal life cycles. Social studies topics include citizenship, geography, economics, Native Americans, and famous Americans. Our specials are PE, Music, Art, Living Histories, Author’s Ink, and Science. Second graders also visit the library weekly.

I love working at Abingdon! My favorite thing part of teaching is connecting school life to home life. I love to study birds with my students. I always feel so excited when my students share what new birds they see!
