Band & Orchestra 

Students at Abingdon have the opportunity to participate in band or orchestra in 4th and 5th grade. The instruments offered for band are Flute, Saxophone, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, and percussion. For orchestra the instruments offered are Violin, Viola and Cello. Instruments can be rented from Abingdon or a local music store. Students do not need any prior experience to participate in band or orchestra. Students who choose to participate in band and orchestra give two after school concerts throughout the year, one in Winter and one in the Spring.

 

This year, the Winter Instrumental Music Concert date is on February 1st in the Abingdon gym. Students are expected to arrive 6:00 PM and the concert starts at 6:30 PM.

The Spring concert will be on May 9th same deal in the gym, students are expected to arrive at 6:00 PM and concert starts at 6:30 PM.

Janet Kingsley

Janet Kingsley teaches integrated music, movement and drama and is co-choral director at Abingdon Elementary School. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Vocal Music Education from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ where she received her Kodaly training and has Level III Orff Schulwerk certification. She holds a Masters in Arts Administration from Towson College and Graduate Certification from Catholic U. of America, D. C. in "Creative Teaching through Drama." Ms. Kingsley received her acting and dance training in professional studios in NYC where she performed Off and Off-Off Broadway and has also performed in regional and stock theatres. Ms. Kingsley has taught and developed programs for two theatres. In NYC, she was director of the theatre education wing for the Apple Corps Theatre. In Bend, OR, she was producing artistic director for a non-profit theatre company involving a wide audience and over 800 participants, ages 5-80, in education and theatre productions dedicated to illuminating history and contemporary social issues. Ms. Kingsley has taught performing arts in both private and public schools. She began her teaching career in 1975 as co-curriculum developer and performing arts teacher for the public, magnet "School for the Gifted & Talented" in Elizabeth, NJ.
