Technology PD

Abingdon Elementary School in Arlington, VA (APS) is using a digital badging system to track our Technology PD (Professional Development).

This allows our teachers more flexibility in:

  1. What PD they choose (like a “Choose Your Own Adventure”)
  2. When and where they do this PD
  3. How they choose to implement this PD into the classroom.

There are many different technology topics to study, and different styles of professional development, each with their own Badge to gain!

Flipped PDFLIPPED PD:

Teachers choose a topic that they want to learn more about.  Each topic is broken down into the multiple sections and gives our teachers a chance to reflect on what they have learned to earn a badge!

Topic Sections:

  • What is this?
  • Ways to Use This for Teaching and Learning
  • Video Tutorials
  • PDF Instruction Sheets
  • Classroom Examples
  • Other Resources
  • How to Earn Your Badge

Teachers choose how much time to spend learning about each topic (based on their individual level), and then implement and document their use in the classroom.  Once they have posted their proof of use and a short reflection on the “Reflections After PD” Blog Page, they will receive a Flipped Digital Badge on the topic that they studied.

Face-to-Face PDFACE TO FACE PD:

Teachers attend F2F teacher run PD on each Tuesday (3:00-3:30).  Tech Tuesdays each use one or more PD style.  Attending Tech Tuesdays gives our teachers a chance to learn from their colleagues and reflect on what they are doing with technology in their classrooms in order to earn a badge!  Here is the Plan for Tech Tuesdays 2016-17: Tech Tuesday 2016-2017

Various PD Styles We Will Use:

  • Camp Fires
  • Speed Dating
  • Ignite Sessions
  • “Appy Hour”
  • SAMR Slams
  • Prep/Debrief about Classroom Visits

Teachers attend these fun face-to-face Tech Tuesday events (30 mins) and then reflect, implement and document their use in the classroom.  Once they have posted a short reflection of what they learned and how they hope to implement this strategy on the “Reflections After PD” Blog Page, they will receive a F2F Digital Badge.

Leader of PDLEADERS of PD:

Teachers have multiple opportunities each year to share their success (and challenges) with their colleagues!  Tech Tuesdays are all about celebrating each other, learning from our neighbors, and collaborating with one another!   Each Tech Tuesday (3:00-3:30) will use one or more PD style.  Participating as a Leader in a Tech Tuesdays will give our teachers a chance to share what they are doing and what they have learned with their colleagues and reflect on what they shared in order to earn a badge!

Various PD Styles You Can Be A Leader Of:

  • Speed Dating
  • Ignite Sessions
  • Classroom Visits

Teachers that help lead (or present/share) at these fun face-to-face Tech Tuesday events (30 mins) and then post what they presented with a short reflection on the “Reflections After PD” Blog Page,  will receive a Leader Digital Badge.

Reflections After PDREFLECTIONS After PD:

By completing a short reflection on the “Reflections After PD” Blog Page, teachers will earn Digital Badges in their Credly accounts.

And Digital Badges = Technology PD Credit in ERO

We have developed a point system for each badge based on the hours an average teacher might spend to master and earn each particular badge.  This point system will then be used to give our teachers PD Credits in ERO!

In order to start collecting your badges, you will need to set up your Credly Account and join our Reflections After PD Blog.  You will learn how to do this by earning your first badge – the “Credly Badge“, and your second badge – the “WordPress Badge“.  After these first two badges, you can go in any order that you want!  Have fun searching for badges that will inspire you!
