Mathematics instruction in APS is aligned to the five Process Standards for Mathematics developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and promoted by the Virginia Department of Education. At Abingdon we focus on strengthening number sense, talking about math concepts, and learning new concepts hands-on in Math Workshop.

Abingdon Kindergarteners focus on oral language development through interactive read-aloud, content knowledge building, morning meetings, and play.  Our kindergarten students build phonological awareness skills and phonics skills daily to help them acquire the foundational literacy skills necessary for beginning reading using our Wilson Fundations and Heggerty Phonemic Awareness resources.  We develop general content knowledge and vocabulary through thematic units using the Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) resource. Beginning writing skills are integrated into our phonics and CKLA lessons.

Additionally, we emphasize letter formation in Kindergarten. Kindergarteners receive small group instruction in literacy to both extend and reinforce necessary skills for all students to begin reading.Through our partnership with the Kennedy Center, Kindergarteners are learning good citizenship through Living History. As the year progresses, the students will be introduced to additional strategies for fluent reading and writing.

I love teaching our youngest learners! This is my 16th year teaching, and every year I hope to inspire our newest students to love being in school and always be curious to learn new things.

I've been an educator since 2009, first teaching science at Potomac Overlook Regional Park and the Outdoor Lab, then as a Special Education Assistant and Kindergarten Assistant at Abingdon. My role as a Kindergarten Assistant is to support the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of my students in our homeroom, as well as at specials, recess, and lunch. I really enjoy getting to know my students over the course of the school year, building trusting relationships with them and a strong sense of community. I also look for any opportunity to share my love for nature with my students. My husband and I both grew up in Arlington, and now live in Falls Church with our two dogs and pet snake. In my free time, I enjoy spending time outdoors hiking with my dogs, and making art, including knitting, drawing, and painting.
